How to Stay Active Outdoors with Eczema

Staying active is a key part of living a healthy lifestyle and what better way to get exercise than to do it outdoors? Fresh air, cool mornings, and an eczema flare?! That’s what we don’t want! Eczema flares can be common during and after exercising. These tips will point you in a healthy direction while staying active outdoors without an eczema flare.

Eczema flares are common during summer months because there are many different temperatures our bodies endure. Blistering hot to freezing air-conditioned rooms to swimming in pools, our skin faces more changes than other times of the year. Also, the salt in sweat and the chlorine in swimming pools can be irritating to individuals that suffer from eczema. Luckily, there are solutions to control and manage summertime eczema symptoms.

Per usual, bathing and moisturizing routines should not end. Even though our skin is not as dry as it is in the winter, it’s equally important that your skin gets proper moisture no matter the time of year.

Use odorless sunscreen with at least 30 SPF. Apply 5-10 minutes before you swim or begin to sweat. Pay attention to ingredients in your moisturizers, sunscreens, shampoos/conditioners. AD Rescuewear carries dermatologist-tested sport sunscreen, free from common chemical irritants. Also, avoid exercise during the warmest times of the day, from 12:00PM to 3:00PM.

Eczema Sleeves for Sports and Exercise

Eczema sleeves are a great alternative to our long sleeve shirts during the summer months. Our eczema sleeves, made out of 100% TENCEL® fabric can be placed over the elbow or knee. Both areas collect sweat during exercise, and are very common eczema flare spots. The AD RescueWear eczema sleeves are dye, zinc and chemical FREE and greatly inhibit the growth of bacteria on the fabric keeping skin healthy and dry. These eczema sleeves are made in the U.S.A. Eczema socks, gloves, shirts, and suits can also offer relief in targeted areas. All AD RescueRear clothing can be found here.

After spending time outdoors running, walking, swimming, or other activities it is crucial to shower as soon as possible. If sweat or chlorine has the opportunity to soak into your skin, the salt and chemicals will dry skin quickly, drastically, and can also be extremely irritating. The drier your skin gets, the more likely it is to crack allowing bacteria to enter. If you don’t have the opportunity to rinse off, pour a water bottle over your skin to wash it off.

Staying active outdoors can be enjoyable and relaxing with eczema if you listen to your body. Keep up on your daily cleaning and moisturizing routine. Take regular breaks and go at your own pace. Living a healthy life will improve other eczema symptoms and make your life more manageable. Don’t let eczema get in your way of staying active. Get out there and enjoy!
